Racism at Menlo...

The Uneducated Have a Field Day

Here at Menlo, we have forums in which nearly every social problem is discussed. Drugs, alcohol, smoking, drinking and sex are all covered either by guest speakers, advocacy groups, or freshman seminar. What is not covered is the darkest of all social ills: racism. People may say that Menlo is a non-discriminatory school. This may be true for faculty members, but many students have absolutely no problem using demeaning phrases and words.

I am not saying that all of Menlo's population is racist, but a significant part is. These people are obviously uneducated in this respect, and come from homes where diversity is not smiled upon. Ethnic diversity is not a bad thing, in fact, diversity is the very thing upon which our society is based. The amount of prejudice existing at Menlo varies. At its highest extreme, I have heard people say "I'm glad O.J. Simpson went free... All he did was kill a woman and a Jew." There is absolutely no way for anyone to defend such and statement. It's racism, pure and simple. And it's wrong. So I urge you, students of Menlo, take a look at the people around you and the things that they can offer before saying something stupid.
