Editor's Column

The next issue of TSC will be published on Wednesday, December 13, so that everyone will have time to discuss whatever issues may be broached. We recommend that subscriptions be purchased soon, since Issue VII will be the last free issue this year.

Last week, a subscription form was attached to the back of TSC, encouraging readers to support the publication in its endeavor to be self-supporting. As previously discussed in the editor's column [TSC, Issue IV], the editors have minimized production costs, such that each copy of TSC will cost the editors exactly tweve cents. The offered subsciption rate-21 issues for $2.00-costs the reader less than ten cents an issue; this rate embodies the true meaning of a bargain, a concept which seems to have drifted into oblivion in today's world. The subscription rate of TSC is so low that the editors take a financial loss of $0.42 per subscription; we can only hope to cover this deficit through advertisements. This consequent financial self-sufficiency will grant the publication independence from the administration, thereby minimizing a potential conflict of interests.

The editors of TSC realize that, although $2.00 is hardly a drop in the bucket for a six month subscription, the publication, as the voice of the people, ideally should not be restricted to subscription readership. On this note, TSC vows to return to its subscribers any profit which the publication might accrue, distributing this funding equally among its subscribers, with a maximum refund of the initial $2.00 subscription rate. Id est, if TSC acquires enough revenue through advertisements and donations to finance the paper, subscribers will each receive equal partial or total refunds, up to $2.00. This refund policy not only encourages students to advertise in TSC, it also demonstrates that the primary goal of TSC is not profit, but rather an open forum for the expression of students' views; TSC believes that financial independence will allow the publication to operate separately from any particular department of Menlo School or affiliation therewith. We encourage readers to subscribe to TSC; we feel that the reading material provides for intellectual stimulation, and, consequently, a price of ten cents per issue would be a bargain even without the establishment of TSC Remuneration.
